Privacy policy

Last updated 30 April 2026

This page explains how the 5% for Cycling campaign site collects and uses your information. The campaign is run by Bicycle Network Incorporated (ABN 41 026 835 903). Their full organisation-wide privacy policy is at bicyclenetwork.com.au/privacy — this page describes the parts that apply to this site specifically.

What we collect

We only collect information you give us, plus a small amount of anonymous usage data:

  • Address you search — used to find your Victorian electorate. We store the label of the address along with submissions you make below, but not your precise location.
  • Letter to your MP— if you use the "Email your MP" or "Copy letter" button, we save the letter, your name, suburb, electorate, MP, the personal message you wrote, and (if you opted in) your email address.
  • Newsletter signup — if you tick the option to receive campaign updates, we save your email, name, suburb and electorate.
  • Anonymous usage counts— totals of how many times each electorate is viewed, which tabs are opened, and which share buttons are clicked. These are aggregate counts only; they don't identify you.

Why we collect it

  • To send your letter to the right MP and (if you opted in) Legislative Council members.
  • To keep you informed about the campaign if you signed up for updates.
  • To understand which electorates and parts of the site are getting traction so we can run the campaign more effectively.
  • To demonstrate public support to government decision-makers (in aggregate — never with your personal details attached).

Who we share it with

We don't sell your information. The only parties who see it are:

  • Your MP and (if you ticked the option) Legislative Council members — you are sending the letter to them directly via your own email client.
  • Bicycle Network campaign staff and partners running this initiative.
  • Service providers we rely on to run the site: Mapbox (address search and maps), Google / Firebase (database, authentication, anti-abuse), Vercel (hosting). These providers process information on our behalf under their own privacy policies.
  • Where we're legally required to (e.g. court order).

Where your data is stored

The service providers above (Google / Firebase, Vercel, Mapbox) store and process data on servers located in Australia and overseas, including the United States. By using the site you consent to this overseas storage and processing. Each provider is bound by contractual obligations to handle your information consistently with the Australian Privacy Principles.

Email and the Spam Act

We will only send you campaign updates if you opted in by ticking the newsletter box. Every email we send will include a clear unsubscribe link, in line with the Spam Act 2003 (Cth). You can also unsubscribe at any time by emailing bugs@bicyclenetwork.com.au.

Cookies and similar technology

We use a small amount of browser storage to remember which electorates and tabs you've already viewed so we don't double-count them in our usage stats. We use Google reCAPTCHA v3 to block automated abuse (the Google Privacy Policy applies to that). We don't use third-party advertising or tracking cookies.

How long we keep it

Letter records and newsletter signups are kept for the duration of the campaign and for our records afterwards. You can ask us to delete your information at any time (see below).

Your rights

You can ask us to access, correct or delete the information we hold about you. Email bugs@bicyclenetwork.com.au and we'll respond within a reasonable timeframe.

We follow the Australian Privacy Principles under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). If you have a privacy concern we can't resolve, you can lodge a complaint with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC).

Children

This site is intended for adults. We don't knowingly collect information from children under 15. If you're a parent or guardian and believe a child has submitted information, please contact us so we can remove it.

Changes to this policy

If we make material changes we'll update the "last updated" date at the top of this page. Substantial changes will be flagged on the homepage.
